In 1988, the share of a median household’s income devoted to higher education was 22 percent; in 2011 it was more than 50 percent. Demand for college degrees continues to grow, even in light of demonstrated evidence that there is not sufficient demand for existing college graduates in the workforce. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:   The current youth (ages 16-24) unemployment rate is 19.1 percent- the highest on record since data collection began in 1948. College can be a means of getting where you want to go, but in order for it to work effectively, you have to have some idea of where you are heading.

MUST KNOW RULES for making college pay off OLD RULE NEW RULE A college degree will set you apart Begin college visits in the Admission Office It doesn’t matter what you major in, as long as you get a degree A college degree ensures financial security Liberal arts graduates can do “anything” A college degree is necessary for a middle-class lifestyle College is the new high school diploma Begin college visits in the Career Center Majors Matter College can be a risky financial investment; hedge your bets Make sure your degree has a clear relation to existing or emerging jobs A profession or skill in demand is necessary for a middle class lifestyle.
