Introduction of New Building Coordinators

Kalamazoo County Central Dispatch and WMU Transition Plan March 2018

Kalamazoo county consolidated dispatch history May 2017 Surcharge funding mechanism did not pass Several attempts over past 30 years 2015 Executive Director Jeff Troyer hired July 2018 WMU will be ready for transition 2014 Kalamazoo County Consolidate Dispatch Authority created February 2017 August 2017 KCCDA agreed on a five-year funding model for consolidated dispatch November 2018 Estimated transition to county wide dispatch center

Presently 5 Public Safety Answer Points

Consolidating to single Public Safety Answering Point

Will WMU officers still be on campus? Yes! This is consolidated dispatch, not a consolidated police force 32 sworn police officers dedicated to campus All major services still provided

What will change with WMU Police Services? 511 Monroe lobby will be open only during normal business hours

What happens to 7-5555? Stays a WMU number Automated attendant setup Press 1 if this is an emergency Press 2 if you would like to speak with WMU Police Administration during business hours Press 3 if this is a facilities related request

Are response times affected? Currently, if you call 911 from a cell phone on campus, you could be directed to one of the other PSAPs, then transferred to the WMU dispatch area Having one central dispatch center will improve response times Prevents call forwarding from dispatch to dispatch

What does this mean for the campus community? Minimal changes for staff and students 911 for emergencies 7-5555 for non- emergency police needs 7-8514 for facilities needs

What about all the other things that WMU DPS does for us? Blue light emergency call boxes Safe Ride student escort service AED alarms Elevator emergency cab buttons Panic buttons

How are we going to notify the campus community? Mid-April News story in Western News and WMU News Late August Back-to-school news story/progress report on timing and benefits June Information relayed to students and parents at orientation Late Fall Notice to campus community that switch over is about to happen
