Dimension Practices

Linear Dimensions Linear dimensions are divided into two categories: Size Dimensions Location Dimensions These two categories will be used in this PowerPoint and the rest of the lesson.

Size Dimensions Size dimensions describe the size of each geometric feature. With respect to linear dimensions, size dimensions are sometimes referred to as overall dimensions, and will tell the viewer the overall width, height, and depth of an object.

Size Dimensions

Location Dimensions Location dimensions show the location of each geometric feature within an object or view. Location dimensions tell the viewer where edges occur inside an object view.

Location Dimensions Linear Dimensions Introduction to Engineering DesignTM Unit 1 – Lesson 1.3 – Measurement and Statistics Location Dimensions The students should notice the location of the dimensions and how the largest are on the top or outside and they get gradually smaller as you get closer to the object. Width Height Depth

Width Height Depth

Width Height Depth Linear Dimensions Introduction to Engineering DesignTM Unit 1 – Lesson 1.3 – Measurement and Statistics Width Height Depth Talk to the students about over dimensioning and what is meant by over dimensioning. Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2007

Width Height Depth Linear Dimensions Introduction to Engineering DesignTM Unit 1 – Lesson 1.3 – Measurement and Statistics Width Height Depth Again remind students about over dimensioning. Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2007

Now Let’s Practice Linear Dimensions Introduction to Engineering DesignTM Unit 1 – Lesson 1.3 – Measurement and Statistics Now Let’s Practice Have students start working on Activity 1.3.4 Linear Dimensions. Walk around room to check progress and understanding. Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2007
