Water Cycle

Water Cycle Continuous movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean

Impermeable Rock Water cannot penetrate into this layer of rock

Permeable Rock Rock that allows liquids or gases to pass through it

Aquifer A body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater

Infiltration The downward movement of water through pores and other spaces in soil due to gravity

Runoff Precipitation that flows overland into streams and rivers

Evaporation When a liquid at the surface changes to a gas Arrow always going up

Condensation Gas changes into a liquid Arrow always in the clouds

Precipitation Rain, Snow, Sleet, or hail that falls from the clouds onto Earth’s land and oceans Arrow always points down

Transpiration The evaporation of water from plants through pores in their leaves Arrow always points up from plants

Water Table (also called Groundwater Table) upper level of an underground surface in which the soil or rocks are permanently saturated w/ water.
