Gulf Bend Community Collaborative Group “Crafting Sustainable Collaboratives” Gulf Bend Community Collaborative Group 22 June, 2018

Who are we? We are a collaborative community of 7 rural Texas counties We typify rural communities that comprise nearly 80% of the Texas area Like all other rural Texas regions, we have limited resources and growing behavioral health needs

Building a Collaborative

Who are the Players?

Capacity for thinking – conceptually, imaginatively, systematically, and opportunistically – with regard to the attainment of success in the future Strategist

Strategist Develops the Plan of Action Defines the Question Identifies the Problem Finds Opportunities to Fix It Strategist Makes the Case Develops the Plan of Action

HOW DO YOU FIND? Requires a search INTJ (Myers-Briggs) Introversion, Intuition, Thinking, Judgment Very rare Only 2% if the population Good Strategy Bad Strategy, Richard Rumelt

Champion

Champion Identifies Issues and Raises Them Quickly Identifies and Manages Resistance Argues for a Cause on Behalf of Someone Else Creates Super-Users Tenacious

HOW DO YOU FIND? You don’t find a champion. They find you. “If you build it a champion will come” “When the project is ready a champion appears”

Stakeholders!

Anyone who can ruin your day! Interested entities both internal and external Those who can impact the project Those who are impacted by the project Those with a vested interest in the success of the project Those with a vested interest in the failure of the project Anyone who can ruin your day!

The Cast

The Work of the Collaborative Meet future Mental Health needs Forecast short and long-term community needs Cultivate Community Relationships Collaboratives chase community needs. But the collaborative comes first. Don’t let a need drive the collaborative. Collaboratives exist apart from the needs they chase

Meeting future mental health needs Gulf Bend Community Collaborative Plausible future? Problems A to B? Solutions A to B! Possible? Probable? Preferred? Prototype Implement Forecast environment, concept, organization, people, preparations, equipment, facilities, resources B Change Mental Health Programs A Irrelevant Time

We have to do better We have a problem Rural Texas communities are ill- equipped to care for people with behavioral disorders Rural Texas jails are de facto mental health care providers for people with serious mental illness We have to do better
