P.J. Dougherty U.S. Department of Energy Building on the National Investment: Promoting the Use of Wind Technology P.J. Dougherty U.S. Department of Energy

Promoting Use of Wind Energy Build on National Legacy and Investment Multiple National Needs Support Rural Economic Development 1650s in NYC; up to 1930s Need more power – need more renewable power (RPSs, Choice) Project Development and long-term benefits from wind

Wind Promotion Focus 6% of Nation’s Electricity by 2020 (Industry Goal) 32 states > 20 MW by 2005/16 states > 100 MW by 2010 5% of Federal sector electricity by 2010 Team Wind & Partnerships State Focus Workshops/Briefings Working Groups Wind Resource Maps & Measures Utility Outreach (IOUs, Coops, Munis) Tribal Wind Focus Federal Energy Sector New turbines are ready to operate 98 % of the time Wind does NOT Compete with Coal, Oil, Gas

State Workshops

Legislative/State Briefings

State Wind Working Groups

Wind Resource Maps

These maps are essential in selling wind potential to key stakeholders, specifically state legislators, and other key state government stakeholders. Comparison of Digital Wind Map from 1987 U.S. Wind Atlas and New (2000) High-Resolution (1-km2) Wind Map North and South Dakota What’s RO role??? ROS leverage RO WPA funds, state and private sector funds to develop maps. In many states, NREL will take sole lead and pay with internal funds. In other states, ROs take more of a lead. 1987 2000
