INTERNET SAFETY

Internet Usage 78% of North Americas population uses the internet as of April % of teens use the internet in The United States. 80% of children, ages 0-5, that use the internet use it at least once a week.

Integrating Internet Safety into Curriculum Content Instruction The 2006 legislation requires divisions to integrate the new Internet safety component within the curriculum. All instructors should teach Internet safety and take every opportunity to warn of potential dangers and model safe and appropriate Internet use.

Maturity Levels Exposure to high volumes of harmful sexualized or hate- driven materials may lead teenagers to participate in inappropriate or possibly illegal activities. The human brain is not fully mature until the age of 21.

Risks and Dangers Children of All Ages Face Online Examples of Inappropriate Information: Pornography Hate Intolerance Gore Violence Hoaxes Misinformation and hype.

Dangers Online Cyberbullying Cyberbullying is any use of information technology to deliberately harass, threaten, or intimidate someone. 1 in 3 teens have experienced cyberbullying.

Dangers Online 1 in 5 children receive an unwanted sexual solicitation through the Internet each year. Only around 25% of these children tell a parent or adult.

Internet Safety Tips Anytime a teenager is going out, someone probably asks these three questions: Where are you going? Whos going with you? When will you be back? When a student gets on-line you should ask the same questions!

Internet Safety Tips Remind teens that once they post information online, they cant take it back. Warn teens about the dangers of flirting with strangers online. Tell teens to trust their gut if they have suspicions.

Filtering System Websense is our schools systems online filtering system. Websense blocks websites that may be considered inappropriate in the school system.

Filters are not Fail Proof! Teachers must watch where students go on the Internet in the labs and classrooms at all times. Teachers must provide an academic purpose before allowing students to go online. Teachers need to keep up-to-date on Internet safety issues and provide accurate, timely information to students.

Other Dangers and search engines are the most popular internet usage activities for adults. Every week 57,000 fake addresses try to infect users. New viruses can sweep the planet within minutes.

Be Informed Beware of unexpected or unsolicited attachments. Even viewing a virus infected can install the virus on your computer. Webpages cannot carry a virus themselves but can call up programs and files that will install on your computer. Only accept downloads from trusted and secure websites.

Have a Good School Year!
