Unit 1 CUBISM: Still Life This unit focuses on the art movement Cubism and the Cubist artist Georges Braque. You will look at how Georges Braque interpreted the world around him, exploring the ordinary, everyday things that made up his reality, such as music and his personal possessions, and how this influenced his artworks. You will use various sources of inspiration to generate ideas, and develop your own Cubist artworks. You will also explore a wide range of materials and techniques to try and copy the Cubist style.

Describe Braque’s use of tone, perspective, viewpoint and texture in Still Life with a Pitcher. Make notes in the form of a brain storm before writing your response. 4. A characteristic of Modernism is the avant-garde, that is, finding new ways of expressing yourself and wanting to be original. In seeking the avant-garde, artist moved away traditional art and realism, either by developing theories or expressing their personal feelings. Both approaches eventually led towards artists creating more abstract (unrealistic) artworks. How does Braque’s art making practice fit with these Modernist ideals? Unit 1
