Thursday, 15 November 2018Thursday, 15 November 2018 Patriarchy Learning Objective To understand patriarchal society and its impact on Shakespeare’s works.

What do the following images connote?

Patriarchy Society in which men hold primary power, lead roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control of property. Within the family, fathers or father-figures hold authority over women and children. Do we live in a patriarchal society? Are there professions that are stereotypically assigned to a specific gender? Where have you seen examples of patriarchy in your life?

How are the men and women presented in the artwork?

Is this version of the artwork acceptable?

Women in Elizabethan Society Read the handout about the roles and treatment of women in Elizabethan Society, and answer the following: What role were women expected to take at home? What does “patriarchal” mean? What kind of education were women allowed to have? What professions were forbidden for women? What were allowed? What was not allowed to be passed down to women? What was the exception? What were husbands allowed to do to their wives? Which women suffered the most during Elizabethan times? Why?

Patriarchal Society You are a woman living in a patriarchal society. Write a diary entry explaining the struggles you face daily and the choices that are taken away from you; such as not being allowed to go to school, not being allowed to choose who you marry and not being allowed to vote.

Consolidation How far have we come as a society in regards to patriarchy? What has changed? What can we do to ensure equal treatment of both men and women?
