In what ways and how effectively was England governed under Henry VIII? Good learning: Recap how Henry was able to secure his break from Rome Great learning: Explain how the break with Rome affected Henry VIII’s powers as King Even better: Evaluate the impact of the break with Rome How far did intellectual and religious ideas change and develop and with what effects? Key Words: How effectively did the Tudors restore and develop the powers of the monarchy? In what ways and how effectively was England governed during this period? How important was the role of key individuals and groups and how were they affected by developments?

How was Henry able to get his divorce from Catherine? TASK: for homework you were asked to complete this diagram. I would like you to check your answers with your partner and add any extra information in green pen. Exploiting weaknesses in the Church Use information on handout under the same heading 1529-1532: Increased influence of reformers Use information on page 69 and first two paragraphs on page 70 1529 – 1533: Pressure on the Clergy Use information on Page 71 for information 1529 – 1533: Pressure on the Pope Use information on Page 71 and on the handout Henry marries Anne Boleyn Use information on the handout. Handout refers to page 78-79 of the Oxford textbook (Elizabeth on the front) CHALLENGE: Who is responsible for Henry VIII getting his divorce in the end? The last 2 paragraphs on page 70 talk about how Henry changed from a vague to an official policy. Read through those paragraphs again and write down the different arguments about why this was the case. Which one are you more convinced by and why?

How was Henry able to get his divorce from Catherine? Now that we have at what happened, it is now time to think about who was responsible. TASK: Make a copy of the people below and rank then in order of who had the biggest impact and using your homework explain your top and bottom choices. Come up to the learning wall and place your post-it note next to who you think was responsible. Parliament Cromwell Henry Ann Boleyn Cranmer Reformers CHALLENGE: Try and make links between the different people

How was Henry able to get his divorce from Catherine? TASK: You were also asked to read through the historians on page 70 and decide which one you feel was the most convincing. Take your post-it from the previous task and put it next to the historian that you feel is the most convincing. Conrad Russell: Divorcing Catherine without the Pope’s permission was in his mind as early as 1527 Geoffrey Elton: Henry was unsure about what to do and feared an open split with the Pope

Establishment of Royal Supremacy: Henrician Reformation By the end of 1534, Henry (with the help of Thomas Cromwell) passed a series of Acts of Parliament defining the nature and organisation of the Church in England. These laws systematically stripped away the pope’s control and transferred power in the key areas to the King. This was the Henrician Reformation as far as Henry was concerned – a political reformation over who controlled the Church. TASK: Using the information on your handout from last lesson and also the information on page 74-75 check through your flip learning and add any extra information you might have missed in green pen. Create a revision diagram, different to the one on page 74, which explains how the break with Rome affected henry VIII’s powers as King and the implications it had (use the information on page 75 to help with this). Develop the diagram further to show how the power of the crown increased further as a consequence of this. Use the information on page 89 – 90 to help. Which act do you think was the most important in the break from Rome? Explain your answer. CHALLENGE: How far do you agree with the view that this marked a transformation in the power of the monarchy?

Overall, how much of an impact did the break with Rome have? What happens next? I would like you to predict the impact now that these Acts are in place and what you think might happen as a consequence to the break with Rome. Think about the following: Overall, how much of an impact did the break with Rome have? Will everyone support the changes? Will Henry fully commit to Protestantism? What will happen to the Church? The role of Parliament Impact on foreign relations

The work due in for next lesson is as follows: FLIP LEARNING TASK: Read through the information on page 87 and recreate your own version of the ‘Tudor revolution in Government’ diagram on page 88. The work due in for next lesson is as follows:
