Sooooo…Maggie has a fever, so I’m not here today. You’re about to write a SHORT essay comparing the character of the devil in “The Devil in Tom Walker” to the character of the devil in The Rolling Stones’ song “Sympathy for the Devil”. Ideally, we would listen to the song together as a class, but that’s not going to happen, so you’ll have to listen to it on your ear buds. If you don’t have any, you can borrow some headphones from my front table (please be sure to put them back; they belong to Mrs. Whitlock). The next slide has the lyrics—please read along as you listen to the song (this will make it much easier to understand). The assignment details are on the last slide. You will have today and tomorrow to work on this IN CLASS.

Short essay assignment: “sympathy for the devil”And“The Devil and Tom Walker” Due Thursday, March 8 by the end of the period TO TURNITIN.COM Your essay must include a clear intro with thesis, body, and conclusion The body of your essay should mention and discuss the following: Characterization of the devil as he is portrayed in this song (include the irony of this characterization) What the devil is trying to accomplish and whether or not he is successful The significance of the chorus (Pleased to meet you/Hope you guess my name/But what's puzzling you/ Is the nature of my game). Discussion of at least one of the historical allusions referenced in the song Connections between the song and the short story You should directly quote and cite both pieces at least one (cite the band and line # for the song and author and page number for the story) You are responsible for determining the best way to organize this essay (NO MORE THAN 2 PAGES—NO EXCEPTIONS) Your essay must directly quote and parenthetically cite each piece at least twice.
