Main Idea Power & authoriy in Europe, military buildup, nationalistic feelings and competing alliances set the stage for war.

Great Powers of Europe before W.W.I. England France Germany Russia Italy Austria-Hungary

Setting The Stage At the turn of the 20th Century nations had been at peace for almost 30-years Europe had tried to “Outlaw” war with peace congresses but..

Setting The Stage In little more than a decade a massive war would break out in Europe and spread around the world.

MAIN CAUSES of W.W.I. remember M.A.I.N. M.=Militarism A.=Alliances I.=Imperialism N=Nationalism The Spark: That ignited the powerder keg!

The Powder Keg: Alliances ......

A=what is it B=how did it increase among European Nations?

Cause & effect-#1-Nationalism A=Extreme pride in ones country. It became very intense in Europe B. Led to intense competition and rivalry between the great powers.

#2 Imperialsim A. When a powerful nation controls a weaker one B. Competition over resources, colonies, and power increased imperialism.

Militarism A=Glorification of the Military B=Europeans built larger and larger militaries for protection.

Triple Alliance (1882) A= Alliance between Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungarian Empire B= Forced other nations to form alliances.

The Division Becomes Clear

Triple Entante A=Alliance Between England, France & Russia B-Forced even more nations to join alliances

Assasination in Sarajevo A-Was the spark that ignited the war. B-Austria-Hungry declared war on Serbia, which triggered other nations to declare war on each other.

Kaiser Wilhelm II Forced his way to be the leader of Germany. Built up the German military, especially the Navy, and canceled treaty with Russia. Other nations began to fear Germany.
