What are e-Payments and Digital Wallets ? Device-based digital wallets use near field communication (NFC) Customers can wave their phone or other NFC-capable device near a contactless reader. Samsung Pay Apple Pay Google Pay NFC is a set of short-range wireless technologies < 10 cm. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz on ISO/IEC 18000-3 air interface and at rates ranging from 106 kbit/s to 424 kbit/s.

We’ll mainly cover… Samsung Pay Apple Pay Google Pay Google Wallet

Security Uses Secure Element to store secret information associated with tokenized cards A Secure Element (SE) is a tamper-resistant platform (typically a one chip secure microcontroller) capable of securely hosting applications and their confidential and cryptographic data.

Security Originally released on October 20, 2014 Post iPhone 6, and in Apple Watch, an SE is embedded into the device’s near-field communication (NFC) chip. This is used at payment terminals to perform transactions over NFC. SE emulates a payment card during an Apple Pay transaction. Uses Secure Element to store secret information associated with tokenized cards which are a substitute of sensitive data element with a non-sensitive equivalent. A Token maps back to the sensitive data.

How does it work? Adding a Card to Apple Pay: Either scanning the card or by submitting the card information. The card network acting as a TSP (Token Service Provider) creates a token 1

Traditional Credit Card Payment Processing An acquiring bank (also known simply as an acquirer) is a bank or financial institution that processes credit or debit card payments on behalf of a merchant. The acquirer allows merchants to accept credit card payments from the card-issuing banks’ Card Holder within an association (i.e., Card Networks). https://home.bluesnap.com/snap-center/blog/b2b-payments/ Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS)

Tokenization, when applied to data security, is the process of substituting a sensitive data element with a non-sensitive equivalent, referred to as a token, that has no extrinsic or exploitable meaning or value. The token is a reference (i.e. identifier) that maps back to the sensitive data through a tokenization system. The mapping from original data to a token uses methods which render tokens infeasible to reverse in the absence of the tokenization system https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokenization_(data_security) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokenization_(data_security)#/media/File:How_mobile_payment_tokenization_works.png

Apple Pay uses EMVCO’s contactless specification to communicate with the terminal. EMV contactless mode 2 OR If the terminal does not support EMV contactless, Apple Pay falls back to use contactless MSD (magnetic stripe data) mode.

Data is discretionary to the card network Data is discretionary to the card network. In case of Apple Pay, this is used as a dynamic card verification value (CVV). This is the Device Account Number or the DAN (AMEX) Magnetic Stripe Data, is how older cards store card details. Data is stored as tracks in magnetic stripe cards. Magnetic stripe cards can have up to 3 tracks, and each track (track1, track2, track3) has a different format. Expiration year and month(yy/mm) Service code

Completing the transaction This transaction request is sent to the issuer (the bank or the financial institution who issued the credit card) along with the original PAN. The issuer authorizes the transaction and sends back the response which eventually reaches the POS terminal. 3

“You can use Apple Pay to pay and get paid right in Messages, or by asking Siri. There’s no app to download, and you can use the cards you already have in Wallet.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znyYodxNdd0

How does it work? (NFC) technology to process payments Originally released on August 20, 2015 (NFC) technology to process payments Magnetic secure transmission (MST): The phone emits a magnetic signal that simulates the magnetic strip found on the back of a credit or debit card. In 2015 Samsung acquired mobile payment company LoopPay, which developed the specific MST technology used for Samsung Pay.

VS Samsung Pay works at almost all stores that accept credit or debit cards, not just those with tap-to-pay NFC terminals. Samsung Pay also offers a cash back feature with a number of participating retailers and Chase Pay users can also link the digital wallets with Samsung Pay.

Originally released on September 11, 2015 First called Android Pay. Google launched that mobile wallet in September 2015 in the US and May 2016 in the UK. February 2018, it rolled out an update to Android Pay and became Google Pay.

Security Device lock screens, remote device wiping, and tokenized card numbers: Customers enjoy protections from loss or theft of devices containing token information. Easy integrations: Google Pay do the heavy lifting when it comes to tokenization, making the integration with Google Pay simple for merchants. Reduced merchant risk: The tokenization process means less sensitive customer information for merchants to have to store, reducing your exposure and worries about data breaches.

Payments online Web Developers can integrate with the Google Pay API, customers can make online purchases and not entering their payment and shipping information. Developers can use the Google Pay API to offer one-touch checkout experiences and request any credit or debit card stored in the customer’s Google Account.

Google Pay is officially a one-stop shop for purchases, passes, and payment methods. Google is currently working on bringing Google Pay to all Google products. Google Wallet will soon become Google Pay Send. This app is used to send, request, and receive money from other people. It'll come in handy for tasks like splitting bills.
