Annual meetings with Your Chair/Director Required annual meetings/discussions with Chair/Director regarding progress toward tenure and promotion “A preliminary appointment…is one made with the expectation that, subject to successful reviews, it will be renewed and at some point succeeded by an appointment with tenure.” Most initial preliminary appointments (at the rank of Assistant Professor) are for 3 years.

Faculty Tenure and Promotion at Carleton University Applications for tenure and promotion are made simultaneously, but awarded separately. University criteria for tenure and promotion in Article 10 of Collective Agreement (http://cuasa.ca). Unit approved standards are tailored to the discipline of the unit and should be shared with new appointees so that expectations are known. Unit standards can be obtained from chair/director.

We can help! CUASA provides annual workshops on the tenure and promotion process. Before going up for tenure, confirmation, or promotion attend a workshop or contact us. Sample dossiers should be available in your department.

Academic Workload (Article 13) Faculty workload includes teaching, research/scholarly/creative activities, and service to the University Approximate proportions are 50%, 35% and 15%, respectively For each faculty, normal workload is defined by past practice However, each faculty member’s assigned teaching workload will be less than 2.5 credits Each faculty member in a preliminary appointment shall receive a 0.5 credit course release from the unit teaching load in their first year of appointment
