If you have a role, then there are certain things you have to do.

role The role of the worker bee is to look after the hive. What is the role of a police officer- to watch fires or to keep us safe?

If you are diligent, then you keep working until you’re done.

The worker bees are diligent about cleaning the cells. If you are diligent at practicing a musical instrument, would you be more likely to perform well or perform poorly for a recital?
