Description of Florida Florida’s state capital is Tallahassee, and was chosen in 1824. Florida became the twenty-seventh state in the United States on March 3, 1845. Some of the major cities in Florida include: Orlando, Miami, Key West, and Tampa.

State Symbols The Florida state flower is the beautiful orange blossom. The state tree is the Sabal Palm which we have a lot of in central Florida!

State Facts We are known as “The Sunshine State,” because our weather is always sunny and warm. Our state bird is a mockingbird because of the many that live in Florida and provide us with their beautiful songs.

State Flag The Florida state flag is shown above and you can find it hanging in front of many local businesses and schools.

Fun Facts!  The United States city with the highest rate of lightning strikes per capita is Clearwater. Gatorade was named for the University of Florida Gators where the drink was first developed.

Natural Resources Florida has many natural resources that are important to the rest of the United States. Some of the natural resources we contribute are beef, oranges, seafood, natural sugar and fresh spring water.

Wallace (Wally) Amos, Famous Floridian Wallace, or Wally, Amos was the creator of Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies that we all love. He was born in 1936 in Tallahassee, Florida. He was first a talent executive but left that job to follow his dream of creating the perfect chocolate chip cookie. He currently lives in Hawaii and has a summer home in Florida.

Florida Tradition A green holiday season Most people think of snow-covered rooftops and cuddling up by the fire with hot cocoa when they think of the holiday season, but not in Florida. Here there's usually plenty of green, almost never any snow, and sometimes people are still in short sleeves.

Lots of People!  The current population of Florida is 18,801,310. We were ranked the 4th largest state by population in 2010.

Southeast Region The state of Florida is in the Southeast region of the United States. This region includes Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia

Thank you for visiting Florida!
