Project Overview There is strong evidence that health care delivered by well-functioning teams can lead to improved outcomes for patients and families. Yet too often the disciplines of social work and nursing educate their students for professional teamwork in discipline-specific silos. Collaboration and teamwork skills can best be achieved when different professions engage in interactive interdisciplinary education (IPE).

Project Overview One approach to enhancing IPE is through use of high-fidelity simulation (HFS). HFS is the use of computerized mannequins and simulated scenarios to replicate clinical situations. Simulations include challenges with collaboration, communication, and shared decision-making in stressful clinical environments. The use of HFS in IPE allows for experiential learning and the development of teamwork skills.

Project Overview In March 2017, six (6) graduate Social Work students and six (6) senior Nursing students were recruited to participate in an Interdisciplinary Education Project conducted in the School of Nursing’s High Fidelity Simulation lab.

Evaluation (n=18) 100% of student participants rated the IPE simulation experience as a “outstanding experience” and appreciated learning about collaboration and communication with another discipline.

Evaluation (n=18) Nearly all the students reported that they wanted MORE IPE simulation experiences with diverse scenarios to enhance their professional teamwork in their clinical and field placement settings.
