The Church And Politics Week 1

Attitude 8 To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; 9 not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3:8–9

You are a Congressman/woman! At your tables: - tell people what congressional district you represent and what committee you would like to serve on tell people what it feels like to serve in this role as a congressman or woman, what do you most want/need from the church?

My Answer Prayer: - a servant’s heart for wisdom with the issues strength in the face of wrong grace dealing with the people humility before God and man

1 Timothy 2:1–2 1 First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.

The Church and Politics – A Theological Framework There are two kingdoms in conflict. Every believer has dual citizenship. Human governments are ordained by God to restrain evil. The church is ordained by God to make disciples.

Key Insights “The government has the power to restrain evil, but government does not have power to create righteousness in people’s hearts.”   “When the church makes disciples, the culture will be transformed as Christians begin to live like Christians.”

MBC Position (unwritten, p.1) As a church, our focus is to build disciples – believers in the image of Christ through the knowledge and practice of the Bible. Therefore most of our teaching and efforts are quite apart from politics. In this politicized city and culture, MBC, as a church, does not endorse parties or candidates or hold political forums. (It is fine for individual members to do so, but not in the name of MBC.)

MBC Position (unwritten, p.2) The government’s claim to an issue does not remove the church from areas where the Bible speaks. As a church, we do speak to moral issues within our body, regardless of whether they have been politicized – the Bible is our directive.

MBC Position (unwritten, p.3) As individuals, we have an obligation to know how candidates vote or are likely to vote on biblical and moral issues. Regardless of political affiliations, vote for those who support biblical and moral values.

For Discussion What do you find most helpful about the MBC position on the church and politics? What would improve the MBC position?
