Presentation transcript:

Almost half the class left before the bell on Friday Almost half the class left before the bell on Friday. This is a problem that I will no longer tolerate.

Period 7 End of Class Routine Time to Pack Up Students will: Stow their stuff Remain at desk until bell rings May be on their devices Dispose of trash on the way out Starting today we have a new routine. The 12 students who remained on Friday get their prize today. When we return, the whole class will have the opportunity to earn Krispee Kremes to be awarded at the end of class on December 18th.

Flame Test Summary Due Please get it out and put it on your desk now. If you don’t have one, pick up an orange form and fill it out now.

Essential Question T., Nov. 24th How do fireworks and explosions work? Agenda: Collect Flame Lab Summaries (graded) Flame Test Problems NOVA Video: Kaboom! Movie NOTES are due in Unit 3 Packet. Homework DUE next class: No new homework. Some still have not made up the Unit 2 Exam! The Make Up Test is during AT in the Testing Center. Packet is Due when you go take the test. It is YOUR responsibility to have me sign you up; And initial your green AT calendar

Unit 3: Moving Electrons & Bonding Learning Target: I can relate the patterns in the properties of substances with the strength of the forces between particles (chemical bonds). LT3.a Electron Structure LT3.b Ionic Compounds

Packet Unit #3 Unit 3 Introduction Lesson 17 Lab with all questions answered Book Exercises on p. 90 (#1-2, 5-11)

Flame Test Check-in Na2CO3 (aq) Support with evidence from the lab. What flame color would be produced by the compound? Na2CO3 (aq)

Flame Test Check-in KOH (aq) Support with evidence from the lab. What flame color would be produced by the compound? KOH (aq)

Flame Test Check-in Sr(OH)2 (aq) Support with evidence from the lab. What flame color would be produced by the compound? Sr(OH)2 (aq)

Flame Test Check-in CuCO3 (aq) Support with evidence from the lab. What flame color would be produced by the compound? CuCO3 (aq)

Flame Test Check-in The color depends on the metal. The two compounds with Sr atoms in the formula will have a red flame. Which of the following will produce flames of a similar color when heated? Support with data from the lab. NaCl CaCl2 SrCl2 Sr(NO3)2 Cu(NO3)2 Sodium chloride Calcium chloride Strontium chloride Strontium nitrate Copper (II) nitrate yellow, lavender, red, green the evidence is the patterns in flame colors observed in the flame tests we conducted. The two compounds containing the metal strontium will produce a red flame because the flame test color depends upon the metal. The others will produce different colors.

Flame Test Check-in Where do electrons have the lowest energy? Closest to nucleus What happens to electrons when atoms are heated? Excited to higher energy Light energy—a photon Why do we see the colored flames? (What process produces that event?) e- drop back to lower energy and emit light Closest to the nucleus. Electrons are excited when energy is added by flame or electricity Excited electrons relax back to a lower energy level and release the energy as a photon of light with E = hv

NOVA: Kaboom! WRITE your answers on the guided notes page. It goes in Unit 3 Packet. Select items will be graded.
