Teaching styles: Can you name any teaching styles? What impact does the teaching style have on learning?

Teaching styles Command Style Reciprocal style Discovery style Problem solving style

Prep Prepare a video on your teaching style. It needs to demonstrate the teaching style, and explain what it is. You may also discuss ideal situations it can be used, as well as advantages and disadvantages Minimum 30seconds, maximum 120seconds

All decisions are made by the teacher – no input from performer. Command style Ideal situations: Large groups Disruptive groups Cognitive learners Dangerous situation Tasks are complex Environmental distractions may require issuing of instructions quickly Use when learner lacks fitness; Use if learner lacks motivation; Use if teacher/coach has limited experience/lacks confidence All decisions are made by the teacher – no input from performer.

Command style Advantages: Instructions and objectives are clear Control and discipline are maintained Information can be given quickly if time is limited Large groups can be catered for Disadvantages: No decision making or input from learner Possible lack of understanding Little social interaction Limited individual feedback Little allowance for creativity/responsibility Demotivation as learner becomes disengaged No differentiation of task for differing abilities

Reciprocal style Ideal situations: Decisions made predominantly by the teacher with some input from the performer. E.g. task set by teacher and completed by students in pairs Ideal situations: Learners are more experienced Simple skills are involved Limited danger present Time is available

Reciprocal style Advantages: Instructions and objectives are clear Social interaction & communication skills are developed Learners start to develop responsibility for their own learning Some individual feedback received from partner or teacher Learners develop self-confidence, motivation may therefore increase Teacher can still maintain overall control Disadvantages: May be difficult with beginners Learners may lack sufficient communication skills to be effective Learners may not be able to analyse movement and therefore provide incorrect feedback Difficulty in monitoring large groups to ensure they are on task

Teacher acts as a facilitator Discovery style Decisions made by the performer with some guidance and input from the teacher Teacher acts as a facilitator Ideal situations: When creativity is required e.g. gymnastics routines There is no right or wrong outcome Performers have good communication and interactive skills – or when you are aiming to develop them More experienced performers are involved

Discovery style Advantages: Encourages creativity and decision making skills Development of the learner’s responsibility for their own learning Learners permitted to work at their own pace Development of a greater understanding of the task Increased motivation and self-confidence Improves communication skills and promotes group interaction Disadvantages: Time consuming Difficult with beginners who lack creativity Limited development if learners have poor communication skills Progress of large groups is difficult to monitor Learning is not uniform for all learners

Problem-solving style All decisions are made by the performer – no input from teacher Teacher sets a problem and the learner(s) devise a suitable solution Open-ended approach Encourages creativity while developing cognitive and performance elements of the learner Ideal situation: No ‘correct’ outcome No time restriction Performers are experienced
