Layer torn and cut pieces of paper to create a portrait that shows texture.

By placing pieces of colored paper torn from magazine ads together to create an area of color, visual texture or simulated texture can be created. It will not look smooth and flat, it will look layered and/or faceted.

Add areas of real texture - fold, scrunch, twist, tear. This artwork has intricate folded paper or cloth that creates flower shapes in the hair. The artist then painted the texture to emphasize the edges with white.

You will be adding words to your torn paper project. Try to find words that are on a background color you have already used. This artwork uses only red, white, and black, so all the words match these colors.

The face should have less texture and the colors you use should be very similar. This will help your facial features stand out. Areas such as hair and clothing can have more colors and textures.

Torn Paper Portrait Project 4. Cut out some letters that go with your color scheme. You can use these later to create your own words. 5. Cut out some sections of black writing on a white background and glue it to your project paper. 6. Once you get your self-portrait photo from Ms. Morland, cut off the white background and glue it on top of the words on your project. 7. Begin tearing, cutting, and folding small pieces of your colored paper and glue it over top of your photo to create your Torn Paper Portrait.. 8. You must have at least one area (hair, clothes, background) that uses real texture - Be Creative! Torn Paper Portrait Project On a new page in your journal, write “What Brings Me Joy?” and then write a reflection - you can include drawings. Decide which 2-3 colors you like the most and use them to color your journal page. Take a selfie - or get a classmate to take your picture - and send it to Ms. Morland’s email. cmorland@rcps.info Include your class period and name with the photo! Grab a few magazines and begin looking for your colors - the ones you picked for your journal page. Cut out medium to large pieces of paper in the right colors.
