National History Day Research and Citing

Getting started Sign into your computer. Open a browser. Go to coppercanyonlibrary.weebly.com Go to www.noodletools.com

Trustworthy sources EbscoHost Reputable newspapers (New York Times, Washington Post) Resources listed on the NHD website Encyclopedias Well-researched and cited sources. Stay away from sites that end in .com, .net, and have extreme bias. Do not use Wikipedia.

Plagiarism pla·gia·rism noun the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. synonyms: copying, infringement of copyright, piracy, theft, stealing Think-Pair-Share: Should you use another person’s work when you write your paper? How can you use it without plagiarizing?

Creating citations To avoid plagiarism, you must cite ALL of your sources. When you begin your research, you should begin your Annotated Bibliography. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE END OF YOUR RESEARCH. When you are writing your paper, you must use in-text citations for all direct quotes AND any paraphrasing. Use www.noodletools.com to create and annotate your citations.

Fill in your research question and Thesis.

Click on sources at the top of the screen. Click Create New Citation

Select how you accessed the source and what it is.

Use this to copy/paste citation If you have your citation already, copy paste it here! Right click, then paste as plain text. Use this to copy/paste citation

Fill in as many of the fields as you can. More is better! When finished, click submit.

Send to Word or Docs Add annotation.

Type your entire annotation here.

Finding resources Open up EbscoHost. Password is Aztecs. Select EbscoHost Research Databases, select all, then continue. Do a basic search (name, event, etc.) EbscoHost builds your citation for you. You can copy and paste it into NoodleTools. You should cite all sources you look at. You can always remove them later if you don’t use it!

Searching for books Go to www.tuhsd.follettdestiny.com Login using your computer username and password. Click on Follet Shelf in the upper right corner. You can now search for physical books and e-books.
