3. WESEP 594 Course Overview WESEP 594 Presentations: Let me know if you would like to give one I encourage those of you who are taking qualifier or preliminary exam to present in here first …and those of you who spent the summer overseas External speakers: industry, government, other universities ISU faculty

4. Semester schedule http://home.eng.iastate.edu/~jdm/wesep594/ Let me know if there is anyone in particular who you are interested to invite to provide a seminar… …or if there is any particular type of person you would like to invite to give a seminar. My orientation is to mix technical, policy, environmental, and professional skills (e.g., ethics/writing); I try to touch several disciplines throughout the semester. My name is Brian Selinger and I head up the Iowa Energy Office which is a division within the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Knowing that I am leading the development of a comprehensive energy plan for Iowa, I would be more than happy to partake in your seminar series. http://www.iowaenergyplan.org/

5. International opportunities The following IGERT fellows have had IGERT-funded international experiences in previous years: Huiyi Zhang: China David Jahn: Germany Nick Brown: OFFIS Energies, Oldenburg Michael Czahor: Fraunhofer IWES, Hannover Germany Aaron Rosenberg: École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland The following IGERT fellows had international experiences this past summer (or are having them now): Austin Herrema, Denmark, Germany Austin Downey, Italy Armando Figueroa, University of Sydney, Australia IGERT supports expenses not incurred if you were here (travel, accommodations, some subsistence). you are strongly encouraged to do it; if you are not planning to do it, I want to know “why not”?; it helps you now; it helps you later; it helps your advisor; talk with your advisor, and/or me, regarding where.

6. Attending conferences/writing papers You are encouraged to attend conferences and workshops to present papers and posters. I can provide a significant part of the support for such activities (but not all). it helps you now; it helps you later; it helps your advisor.

7. Information for WESEP advisors It was suggested in our annual review two years back that I send information to WESEP advising faculty. I developed and sent an email and then later posted to the IGERT website – see http://www.igert.windenergy.iastate.edu/faculty/faculty-information/. I will send email to all IGERT/WESEP advisors reminding them of this. Please take a look and let me know if there is anything else I should communicate to them.

8. Upcoming annual review Please respond to Brandi Geisinger’s email request to fill the annual IGERT survey. Dr. Pietrafesa will be here again in late October or November to perform a 2-day review. This is an NSF requirement, and I am grateful to you for taking your time to speak with Dr. Pietrafesa.

9. 2015 Review http://www.igert.windenergy.iastate.edu/about/program-evaluation/ I will go through selected parts from the executive summary and just point to page 17. You might skim through the rest if you have not already done so.

10. Last comments A. Four WESEP students have graduated: Huiyi Zhang, NextEra Morteza Khosravi, ? David Jahn, Post-doctoral researcher at ISU, Atmospheric Science Department Helena Khazdozian, Ames National Laboratory B. There exists the Wind Energy Student Organization (WESO); the president is Fritz Wagner, fwagner@iastate.edu. C. The Wind Energy Systems Lab has greatly expanded under the management of Nick David. Stop in at some point, Room 1111 Coover. D. I am discussing with NSF about a possible renewal of the WESEP IGERT. This will require some work….
