The role of NESSI in the Future Internet Frédéric Gittler, HP Labs NESSI SC Chairman NEXOF-RA Chief Architect

Agenda The Future Internet - a motivation for the NESSI Projects Summit The Future Internet – as a partner for NESSI Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

A new event Addressing a new need Emerging from 4 motivations – The community involvement and the research in NESSI – The Future Internet as a unifying environment for the ETPs and as a PPP proposed by the European Commission Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

1 st motivation - results 2005 – NESSIs vision 2006 – NESSIs SRA volumes 2007 – NESSIs research mechanism 2008 – NESSI Strategic & Compliant Projects (NSPs & NCPs) 2010 –first results of the NSPs and NCPs / individually and together Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

1 st motivation - results NESSI Projects Summit – show how the strong coordination and coherence mechanisms leads to tighter integration of RTD and increase the long- term exposure of the results of our research NEXOF is the hub for the collaboration Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

2 nd motivation – community engagement From 2005 to 2010, NESSI community increased to 420 organisations Split equally between industry and academia Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

2 nd motivation – community engagement 28% of the NESSI organisations are involved in the NESSI research projects This number is already significant But how do we increase it? Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

2 nd motivation – community engagement NESSI Projects Summit – positioned to increase the visibility towards both NESSI members and non-members NESSI Projects Summit – working together to create new research opportunities Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

3 rd motivation – the emergence of Future Internet ETPs eMobility, ISI, NEM and NESSI identify the need for collaboration 2006 – creation of the cross-ETPs working group 2007 – Future Internet identified as a convergence topic for the ETPs, providing end-to-end scenarios Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

3 rd motivation – the emergence of Future Internet The Future Internet? – A unifying environment in which complete user oriented scenarios could be defined – An environment to which each ETP could contribute specific elements to instantiate such scenarios – The environment used to involve users ICT 2008 : the Future Internet position paper by the ETPs Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

3 rd motivation – the Future Internet NESSI Projects Summit – the Future Internet has emerged as the context in which NESSI can address the user needs Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

4 th motivation – the Future Internet PPP An external motivation – driven by the European Commission EU Communication – creation of a FI PPP Introducing a certain level of confusion – What is the role of ETPs? – What type of research will be done at FI PPP level versus ETP level? Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

4 th motivation – the Future Internet PPP NESSI Projects Summit – clarify the role of ETPs and specifically of NESSI in the context of the PPP Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

Agenda The Future Internet - a motivation for the NESSI Projects Summit The Future Internet – as a partner for NESSI Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

The Future Internet – a partner for NESSI Future Internet -Scenario oriented -Large scale pilots -Short to mid-term Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit NESSI -Technology oriented -Coordinated research -From existing results to mid & long-term The Future Internet – building on the research topics and results of the ETPs

The ETPs- speeding up the Future Internet Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit The Future Internet – taking advantage of the ETPs to speed up its deployment The existence of NESSI and of all the ETPs active in the ICT domains is a major advantage for the Future Internet PPP – providing the PPP with a starting point that is advanced both in terms of communities and of coherent mechanisms.

The ETPs- speeding up the Future Internet Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit The Future Internet – taking advantage of the ETPs to speed up its deployment With the ETPs, the Future Internet PPP can speed up its results by building on existing communities, running projects that are already actively collaborating at results level, beyond collaboration at working group level.

NEXOF – a contribution mechanism to the Future Internet NEXOF aims to enable the instantiation of specific service infrastructures addressing identified application needs. NEXOF is constructed by NESSI Compliant and Strategic Projects and Open Contributions through a series of coherence mechanisms Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

NEXOF today Operational & effective mechanism to allow projects to relate contributed results to others in a coherent, integrated, and accessible way Architecture-level relationships Results can be explored online on Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

The Future Internet for NESSI The Future Internet PPP provides NESSI with a great opportunity, and puts the role of NESSI Strategic and Compliant Projects at the forefront of this role. Building on the already impressive results of many of these projects, and moving forward in a coherent manner is at the heart of NESSIs current and future operations. Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

The Future Internet for NESSI The Future Internet has also given us an opportunity to reflect on what are our values for the time ahead of us Valencia, 12 and 13 April 2010NESSI Projects Summit

A strong Research coordination Sharing the vision through a Strategic Research Agenda Promoting strategic projects towards concrete and common results Providing a single access model to research results Implementing different portions of the NESSI vision through SW components including those integrating results from different sources (e.g. NSPs) Encouraging uptake through coordinated contributions to standardisation The Values of NESSI 22/02/ A Software & Services Community Engaging a critical mass from industry, SMEs and academia Focusing research on Internet of Services and Cloud Computing Pooling knowledge and making it accessible Sharing and building a vision Disseminating through dedicated events (ServiceWave, NESSI Projects Summit) Networking towards the creation of research projects in FP7 and other opportunities

This presentations take away NEXOF – the only mechanism that implements a coherent environment to access research results from different horizons The Future Internet – a major partner for NESSI to move towards pilots – and we will work with all of you to ensure that the community benefits from this opportunity through the creation of new research opportunities 4/12/2007NESSI Soft Review
