How the internet sends messages Routers & Redundancy How the internet sends messages

How would you solve? On the handout, how would you solve problem #1? Please write directly on the sheet

Passing a note problem In this scenario, students are like routers Router – a computer designed to receive and redirect packets of information based upon the addressing [IP address]. If you chose to make multiple copies of the note and send in different paths, you are thinking like a router  - based on traffic Multiple messages different routes are called redundancy.

How the Internet Works: Routing Grasslands (Basic) Note: This template is optimized for PowerPoint 2010 and uses a video background. If used in PowerPoint 2007, video elements will play, but all content will be covered by video background when in slideshow. If used in PowerPoint 2003, video will not play, but the poster frame of the videos will remain in place as a static image. The video: Plays automatically after each slide transition. Is 30 seconds long. Seamlessly loops for infinite playback. To add slides or change layout, do the following: To add a new slide, on the Home tab, in the Slides group, click the arrow under New Slide, then click under Motion Background Theme select the desired layout. To change the layout of an existing slide, on the Home tab, in the Slides group, click Layout, then select the desired layout. This template uses the “Pushpin” Theme Font. To access or change the Theme Font, do the following: On the View tab in the Master Views group, select Slide Master. In the Slide Master view, select slide 1 (the Master Slide for Master Layouts that use the video background). On the Slide Master tab, in the Edit Theme group, click Fonts, and then select new theme fonts. Using animated elements: Any animated element will begin after the slide transition and the background video has started.

Six degrees of Separation What is a ‘degree of separation’? Example: I am 2 degrees separated from The US President. Think of who you have met or know. “I know a guy who knows a guy…” Linked in Oracle of Bacon – oracleofbacon.org

We have a basic problem… We need to get a message to someone, somewhere in the world. We need to find a route to accomplish this task Where do I go first? Who do I entrust the message with? Will my message get there? I need to get a message to Issac P. Address He lives in France and is plays tennis semi-professionally He has a wife and 3 kids and lives outside of Paris.

Lives outside of Paris Issac Tennis community France group You

The Internet works in a similar manner Let’s watch a short video! What happens when we access a website overseas? How does a large website travel so quickly?

Internet Simulator Find their IP address Log into code.org and open lesson 10 – Internet simulator Add a router if you need more space (3-4 classmates / router) Send a simple “Hello” to a friend on the same router: Find their IP address Send a message to that address Friend should send a response

Now, let’s read the traffic on our routers Let’s now stop sending messages Click on the Log Browser button to view the table of router data Now, click on the SHOW ALL ROUTERS button
