A.) Governing City-States Up to 750 B.C.- Monarchy rule (king or queen). Thought to be “god-like”. Evolved into an aristocracy: wealthy landowners and military defenders.* Trade expanded, and merchants, farmers, and artisans became the ruling middle class.
Changes in Warfare Iron weapons became cheaper, and ordinary citizens joined the armies. Military life was “glorified”. Led to the emergence of the two greatest city-states: Athens and Sparta. By 500 B.C., Athens was the wealthiest city-state. Philosophers (“lovers of wisdom”) like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle contributed to a new form of government: power of the people.
