Soils Lab What horizon did you collect from? Feel it – what is its texture? describe using words other than dirt or the 4 soil textures. Write your description in complete sentences. Wet it – how much clay is present? Measure the length of ribbon you can make with it. Where does it fall on the soil triangle? Color – what’s its rating on the Munsell Color Chart? (Demo) Map – What good is it, and what’s its name? (WSS) Classify – What order is it? (Find using NRCS) What other soils are in this area? (find using WSS) How do they differ from the soil you collected? Are they in the same order? (Find using NRCS) What soil is KCHS sitting on? How does it rate for corrosion of concrete? Corrosion of metal? Create an AOI for your subdivision. What soil(s) lie under your house? What taxonomic order are they in? How did they rate for crop production? Corrosion of sidewalks and foundations? Based on this, do you feel that your subdivision being where it is the best use of this land?
