Plate Tectonics Arrival: Go to http://ds.iris.edu/seismon/inde x.phtml where it shows a live map of seismic activity. Where on the map are earthquakes most common? Where on the map is the earthquake with the largest magnitude or size?
The Lithosphere The lithosphere is the brittle outer layer of the solid Earth. The plates of plate tectonics are segments of the lithosphere.
Continental Drift The theory of plate tectonics is now well- established. Continental drift is happening as tectonic plates move, with earthquakes and volcanoes often occurring around their edges.
Alfred Wegener (1880 - 1930) He proposed the theory of continental drift in the early 20th century He said the the continents must have been together and moved further apart He based this on similar fossils being found in South America and Africa.
Faults A fault is a break in the earth's crust along which movement can take place causing an earthquake.
Dip Slip Fault In dip slip faults the plates move at a 45 degree angle to each other. This movement changes the appearance of rock layers so that they no longer match up.
Strike Slip Fault In this type of fault the plates move horizontally against one another shifting rock layers left or right.
