Homework: Due Thursday 15th September Set yourself up a public account on ArcGIS (I can send you an email with instructions on how to do this). Spend time exploring ArcGIS – play around with different layers, files etc. to produce maps showing trends with tectonic hazards. Anything that you’d like to present! Feel free to screen shot these, put them onto a word document and print them out (make sure all have clear titles. If you’re feeling particularly technologically savvy, you may decide to tweet what you’ve produced – tag @baker_miss and @NetherhallGeog How’s it going so far?!

Types of Plate Boundaries Global causes of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis Distribution of plate boundaries resulting from divergent, convergent and conservative plate movements (oceanic, continental and combined situations) Cause of intra-plate earthquakes, and volcanoes associated with hotspots from mantle plumes

https://www. geolsoc. org https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Plate-Tectonics/Chap3-Plate-Margins/Convergent/Oceanic-oceanic-collision Video to demonstrate the process.

https://www. geolsoc. org https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Plate-Tectonics/Chap3-Plate-Margins/Convergent/Oceanic-oceanic-collision Video to demonstrate the process. Hypocentre = point under the Earth’s surface at which an earthquake is generated. It can be at any depth between the Earth’s surface and about 700km deep Which of these boundaries would you expect to find the shallowest – deepest hypocentres?

https://www. geolsoc. org https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Plate-Tectonics/Chap3-Plate-Margins/Convergent/Oceanic-oceanic-collision Video to demonstrate the process. How does the depth of the hypocentre affect the impact of the earthquake? What else can increase the impacts of an earthquake?

Are all tectonic events found on these margins Are all tectonic events found on these margins? What does our GIS map show? Any anomalies? Reasons for this?

Explain how hotspots form. Use a diagram to help your explanation. https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Plate-Tectonics/Chap3-Plate-Margins/Mid-plate/Hawaiian-Islands Explain how hotspots form. Use a diagram to help your explanation.

Explain why earthquakes and volcanoes have both predictable, similar and yet different distributions.
