5 is the base and 3 is the exponent Exponents Exponents are a shorthand method of indicating how many times the base is to be used as a factor. 5 is the base and 3 is the exponent

Identifying the Base The trick is correctly identifying the base: It is only the number immediately to the left of the exponent. It does not include the sign unless parentheses are used.
