Ch. 10.3 Wave Interactions OBJECTIVES Describe the 4 kinds of wave interactions Differentiate between angle of incidence and angle of reflection Compare / Contrast constructive and destructive interference

4 Types of Wave Interactions Reflection Diffraction Refraction Interference

Reflection Occurs when a wave bounces off a surface Waves reflect off a surface at the same angle they hit the surface Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection

Diffraction The bending of a wave as a result of the interaction between a wave and the edge of an object

Refraction Bending of a wave as a result of a change in the wave speed Waves travel at different speed through different mediums

Interference Interaction of 2 or more waves Constructive Interference – occurs when 2 wave crests meet at the same time at the same location Destructive Interference – Occurs when the crest of one wave meets the trough of another wave at the same time at the same location
