Achilles Reaction Achilles has promised Athena that he will not fight Agamemnon, not even for Briseis Agamemnon threatens to take an army to seize Briseis if Achilles does not surrender her.

Agamemnon’s Instructions Agamemnon has sent two couriers to collect Briseis Achilles is not upset with the couriers, “Good Heralds of Zeus” Achilles blames Agamemnon for the couriers being there Patroclus is ordered to bring Briseis out of the lodge

Achilles Emotion Achilles cries as Briseis is lead away Ask his Mother for help from her and Zeus Prophesized that Achilles would die if he went to war against Troy

Achilles Mother She rises from the churning surf and asks why Achilles is crying Achilles explains that they raided Thebe and chose Chryseis for Agamemnon Explains to her how Apollo forced Agamemnon to return Chryseis

Influence Thetis rescued Zeus from ignominious, stark defeat The Olympians tried to chain Zeus down Hera, Poseidon, Pallas Athena, Thetis broke the chains of Briareus, a monster with 100 hands who warred with the gods Thetis has favor with Zeus

Persuading Zeus Thetis is going to ask Zeus to help the Trojan cause “All I bore was doom” reference to the fact that Achilles’s life is meant to be short and unhappy Thetis will go to the bronze floor in the royal house in 12 days when Zeus returns
