Evidence Evidence – What the Text Says

Deserts are fantastic ecosystems. No – This is an opinion, not a fact, example, or quote. Deserts get very little rain. Yes – This is a fact that about one characteristic of the desert ecosystem. Deserts have both very hot and very cold temperatures. Snakes live in deserts. No – This is a fact, but it is not a characteristic of an ecosystem. Review finding prompt key words. Review writing topic sentence. Decide whether each evidence supports the topic sentence.

Topic Sentence: The producers in a desert ecosystem have to live without much water. A woodpecker can live in a saguaro. No – This fact is not about the producer. Deserts are hard places for producers to live. No – This fact focuses on the desert, not a producer. Desert cactus store water in their spines. Yes – This fact is about how a producer survives in the desert. Desert shrubs have waxy leaves that hold in water. Review finding prompt key words. Review writing topic sentence. Decide whether each evidence supports the topic sentence.
