In Question 10/5 In Question: What is the source of energy that drives the water cycle?

In Question 10/6 Which phase of water (Gas, Liquid, or Solid) has the most energy. Use your notes from yesterday to help you

TIW Write a summary identifying characteristics of the 3 phases of water, explaining how water molecules change state (evaporate, condense, melt, and freezes) and I will show my understanding of these changes on a formative quiz using the SCR clickers

What is water? Water is made of three atoms Two hydrogen One oxygen The atoms are attracted to each other to form a molecule. oxygen hydrogen

What can water do? Water can change forms with a change in energy like temperature or pressure.

How Phases Can Change Melting Gas Solid Liquid Freezing Condensation Evaporation Gas Solid Liquid Freezing Condensation

What is Melting? When a solid changes into a liquid when you add heat. The vibrating solid molecules begin to move past each other slightly faster and more freely.

What is boiling? When heat is added and the molecules speed up changing them from a liquid to a gas. When water heats up and turns into a gas, it expands and gets bigger.

What is Freezing? When molecules lose energy and slow down. You can see this when: Rain on the road turns to ice when the weather gets colder Water in your ice cube trays freeze into cubes

What is Evaporation? Evaporation happens slowly as molecules with more energy escape the liquid to become a gas. This happens when: You leave water out over a few nights next to your bed and it “disappears”. You get out of a pool and your swimming suit dries in the sun When you hang clothes out on a clothes line to dry.

What is Condensation? This happens when water gas in the air turns back to a liquid on a cooler surface. Like when… You have a cold drink on a hot day and it “sweats”. You can see your breath on a mirror or on a cold day. The bathroom mirror fogs up after a hot shower.

Out Question: Fill in your notes I learned there are __________ (#) phases of water. They are _________, liquid , and __________. Water can ___________ phases with an increase or decrease of energy (or heat). The four changes in phases we discussed today were melting, ____________ , _____________, and ________________.
