Anatomical Orientation and Terms

ANATOMICAL PLANES PLANE – imaginary line

ANATOMICAL PLANES SAGITTAL – lengthwise plane dividing the body into right and left parts

ANATOMICAL PLANES MIDSAGITTAL – lengthwise plane along the midline dividing the body into equal right and left parts

FRONTAL – lengthwise plane that divides the body into ANATOMICAL PLANES FRONTAL – lengthwise plane that divides the body into dorsal and ventral (superior and inferior) parts

TRANSVERSE – horizontal plane that divides the body into ANATOMICAL PLANES TRANSVERSE – horizontal plane that divides the body into cranial and caudal (anterior and posterior) parts

ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION Dorsal = The upper surface or back Ventral = The underside or front

ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION Superior Inferior Superior = Toward the upper (dorsal) body part Inferior = Toward the under (ventral) body part

ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION Anterior = In front of, toward the head Posterior = Toward the tail or rear end

ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION Caudal Cranial Cranial = Toward the head Caudal = Toward the tail

ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION Medial = Toward the midline Lateral = Away from the midline

ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION Proximal = Closest to the point of attachment Distal = Farthest from the point of attachment

Draw the frontal plane on the pig

Draw the frontal plane on the pig

Label the anatomical orientations of the pig divided by the frontal plane
