Emoticons :-) and internet slang Authors: Daria Morajska Aleksandra Noga Aleksandra Szczepińska Authors: Daria Morajska Aleksandra Noga Aleksandra Szczepińska

About emoticons: An emoticon is a written symbol, often 2 or 3 punctuation characters, shows writer's mood or facial expression. Emoticons are often used to inform a reader about the intention of a statement. Over the years, many forms have been created, and now there are hundreds types of emoticons. In web forums and instant messaging text emoticons are often automatically replaced with small images.

History: Their use started in 19th century, when they were sometimes placed in casual or humorous writing. Text emoticons were published in 1881 by the satirical magazine Puck. In 1963 the "smiley face", a yellow button with two black dots representing eyes and an upturned thick parenthesis representing a mouth, was created by artist Harvey Ball.

Examples: EmoticonsMeanings :) :-) =) :] :-] =] ^^ ^.^smile ;) ;-) ;] ;-] ^.-smile with blink :( :-( =( :[ :-[ =[sadness ;( ;-( ;[ ;-[ T.T Y.Ycry :P ;P =Pshows tongue :D ;D =Dwide smile ;* :*hugs and kisses >..< -.-angry :O :o O.o O_O O.O O_oshock -.- -,- :/ -_-impatience

About internet slang: Internet slang is slang words which are used on the Internet. Most of these words are new, such as Wiki and blog, which were not used before the Internet became popular. Some old words were given new meanings, such as mail (which now means ).

History: Internet slang begin when Internet became popular. It usually shortens sentences to couple of letters, but there are also some new verbs and adjectives that people created specially for this use. Like: to flame - to send insulting messages; to ping - to send some data to another computer and see how long it takes to come back.

Examples: Shortcuts Meaning BBIABBe Back In A Bit ATMAt The Moment ATEOTDAt The End Of The Day STWSearch The Web PAWParents Are Watching CUSee You WBWelcome Back HANDHave A Nice Day WURSCWow, You Are So Cool TTYTTalk To You Tomorrow

Our opinion We think that emoticons and internet slang are quite handy when we are in hurry. But there is one defect, if we dont know the meaning of shortcut we wont understand other person clearly and it may end with a great misunderstanding in relationship.

Thnx for your attention!
