The French Revolution produced the overthrow of the French monarchy and in 1799 it also led to the creation of the set of weights and measures we call the metric system. The metric system was legalized for use in the United States in 1866 along with the traditional English system. Today the only countries in the world that do not use the metric system are the United States of America, Liberia and Myanamar.
