Enlightenment Thinkers NAME YEARS LIVED BELIEFS Thomas Hobbes 1588-1679 People agree to be ruled because their ruler pledges to protect their rights. John Locke 1632-1704 People have rights to life, liberty, and property that the government must protect for the common good. Baron de Montesquieu 1689-1755 Separate the parts of government so no one part can become too powerful Voltaire 1694-1778 People have the right to speak freely, and this right should be defended by everyone. Jean-Jacques Rousseau 1712-1778 The legislative power belongs to the people.

Complete on an Index Card How did Montesquieu and Locke specifically influence our current government? Give an example for each of how their ideas are used today.

Early English Influences Magna Carta Parliament/Common Law English Bill of Rights

Magna Carta 1215 – Nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Carta Forbade him from taxing without consent Gave free men certain rights; equal treatment and trial by jury Gave nobles the right to rebel if agreement was broken.

Parliament/Common Law Parliament was a group of noblemen that would provide advice to the king. They assisted with making laws. Common Law is the basic laws that all men had to follow.

English Bill of Rights Rules set by Parliament that the King had to obey. Look at the English Bill of Rights on page 87. List 3-5 of the rights listed that are also a part of the American Bill of Rights
