Presentation transcript:

Niche The role of an animal in its ecosystem Two of the same types of animals can live in the same ecosystem because they have different roles. There are three different types of American Warblers that can live in a spruce forest because they forage and nest in different parts of the forest.

Producers Can make their own food using sunlight and carbon dioxide Terrestrial Plants- Trees, Flowers, Moss, Shrubs, Ferns Aquatic Plants- Algae, Duckweed, Seaweed

Consumers Rely on producers to provide them with food Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Terrestrial Consumers- Lions, Tigers, Bears, Rabbits, Snakes, Mice Aquatic Consumers- Fish, Sharks, Squids, Coral, Whale

Types of Consumers Herbivore- eats only plants and vegetation Giraffe, Elephant, Buffalo, Beaver, Guinea Pig Carnivore- eats only meat Lion, Crocodile, Spider, Tiger Omnivore- eats both plants and meat Bear, Human, Opossum, Badger

Scavengers Eats the remainders of the dead animals Terrestrial Scavengers- Vulture, Hyena, Dingo Aquatic Scavengers- Catfish, Crabs

Decomposers Break down the remainders of dead animals and deposit the nutrients back into the soil Terrestrial Decomposers– earth worm, fungi, bacteria Aquatic Decomposers- snail, mollusk

Food Chain The flow of energy in an ecosystem When animals eat each other, they gain energy

A Food Chain Producer Primary Consumer Secondary Consumer Scavenger Decomposer

Three Kinds of Life Which life-form(s) is the producer? Redwood cone falls from the tree Wood rat eats seed inside the redwood cone Owl swoops down and eats wood rat for dinner Which life-form(s) is the producer? Which life-form(s) is the consumer?

Consumers Need Producers Identify the: 1. Producers 2. Consumers 3. Herbivores 4. Carnivores 5. Omnivores 6. What elements are missing from this food web?

Consumers Need Producers Identify the: Answer Key 1. Producers - plants 2. Consumers – fox, owl, snake, rabbit, squirrel, grasshopper, frog, mouse 3. Herbivores – grasshopper, squirrel, rabbit 4. Carnivores – frog, snake, owl, fox 5. Omnivores - mouse 6. What elements are missing from this food web? Decomposers, SUN The sun is the main source of energy for life on Earth!!
