Hinduism & Buddhism

Questions to be answered From where did the Hindu religion come? How did Buddhism appear in India? Who is the Dali Lama Who is Siddhartha Gautama?

Hinduism Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world. Third largest worldwide. Basic principals of the religion were formulated by 1500 BC.

Hinduism Principals are found in the 4 Vedas or sacred writings: 1. The Rigveda, containing hymns to be recited by the hotṛ; 2. The Yajurveda, containing formulas to be recited by the adhvaryu or officiating priest; 3. The Samaveda, containing formulas to be sung by the udgātṛ. 4. The fourth is the Atharvaveda, a collection of spells and incantations, apotropaic charms and speculative hymns.

Hinduism Aryans believed in many deities who controlled nature. These beliefs were written down in Sanskrit. The Aryan religion changed over time eventually becoming Hinduism.

Hinduism Early Hinduism Hinduism grew out of the customs of many people over thousands of years. Hinduism has thousands of deities. Hindus think of deities as parts of one universal spirit.

Hinduism Early Hinduism The universal spirit is called Brahman. The search for the universal spirit is called the Upinshads which is described in the sacred texts or the Vedas.

Hinduism Early Hinduism Those writings say every living being has a soul that wants to be united with Brahman. And this happens upon death.

Hinduism What is Kharma? Hindus believe that a soul is not joined to Brahman immediately, but must pass through many lives first. On journey, a good person may be born into a higher caste. A bad person may be born into a lower caste or life form. p.5

Hinduism What is Kharma? The idea of passing through many lives to reach Brahman is called Reincarnation. This affects Hindus and how they live their daily lives.

Hinduism What is Kharma? To earn the rewards of a better life, Hindus believe they must perform their duty. Dharma is the divine law requiring people to do their duty in their caste.

Hinduism What is Kharma? Dharma requires people to do the duties of their caste. Farmers have different duties than priests. Men have different duties than women.

Hinduism What is Kharma? Karma is the consequences of how a person lives their life. If a person lives his life in a good way he will have good Karma. This will move them closer to Brahman

Hinduism Major Hindu Deities Brahma Creator of the world Vishnu Preserver of the world Siva Destroyer of the world Ganesha Lord of existing beings Krishna Teacher of the world Lakshmi Deity of light, beauty, wealth, good fortune Surya Deity of the sun Saraswati Deity of knowledge, music and the arts Parvati The Universal Mother

Hinduism What is Kharma? Hindus believe that the people in a higher Varna are superior and that they are suppose to be on top. The belief in reincarnation gives them hope to be born in a higher caste.

Hinduism What is Kharma? Reincarnation- The idea of passing through many lives to reach Brahman Dharma- the divine Law Hindus believe all life is sacred. P.3 6-2A

Buddhism A new religion, Buddhism, appealed to many people in India and other parts of Asia. Around 600 BC people were questioning Hindu ideas. Brahmin priests seemed to only care about their temple ceremonies and not about the people.
