Warm-Up 10 minutes Think, Pair, Share Review your paragraph as I come around to check your work. When instructed to do so, share your connection with the person sitting beside you. Be prepared to share your conclusions with the class.

Writing Lesson: Claim Statements 10 mins. Now, look at the claim statement that you wrote last night. Revise to improve and then highlight it. This will be collected in a few minutes. First, check-out these examples of effective claims from the “Books Under Fire” 3X3 writing frame assignment: Good: The highly praised novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee should not be removed from the high school curriculum because its honest, raw portrayal of racism is beneficial to the knowledge of students, not harmful. Good: To Kill a Mockingbird should not be removed from the high school curriculum because it is important to be exposed to the culture in it and to learn about it. Better: Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned because it shows a realistic view about how America used to be, teaches tolerance, and teaches values.

Unit Four Dystopian Review Materials Needed: Dystopian Notes Whose Choice Chart Phones/Devices to access resources on class website Paper and pencil Steps: With ONE partner, review Dystopian notes. Next, find evidence of the three Dystopian Controls (Bureaucratic, Corporate, Technological, or Philosophical) being used in Fahrenheit 451. Record your findings on paper. Determine the primary control being used. Construct themes based on the three types of control that you identified. Remember, a theme is a message that the author is sending the reader about a universal topic.

What’s on the Test? The test will contain: A very short Dystopian story. 8-10 multiple choice questions on Dystopian characteristics of the story. 4-5 constructed response questions on the story, requiring the use of SAF. 8-10 multiple choice questions on propaganda and rhetorical triangle.
