MODULE 8 – The Ontario Building Code Module Learning Outcomes: Module Contents: MODULE 8 – The Ontario Building Code •Introduction to Part 9 •Definitions •Tables & Supplementary Conditions Module 8 ARCH 28544 – Architectural Studio 2

Introduction to OBC Part 9 WHY do we have a building code? … we have the building code in order to PROMOTE PUBLIC SAFETY via uniform building standards … and also to provide access to all In Ontario, the building code was implemented in: 1975 First Canadian Place in Toronto was built in the same year Module 8 ARCH 28544 – Architectural Studio 2

The OBC has an entire section of DEFINITIONS… what a great resource! Did you know that any word that you see written in italics can be found in this section? FOR EXAMPLE: Roof gutter means an exterior channel installed at the base of a sloped roof to convey storm sewage. Storm sewage means water that is discharged from a surface as a result of rainfall, snow melt or snowfall. Module 8 ARCH 28544 – Architectural Studio 2

Tables & Supplementary Standards What will we use the tables for? Size and Spacing of Studs Forming Part of Sentence 9.23.10.1.(1) Notes to Table 9.23.10.1.: Item Column 1 Type of Wall Column 2 Supported Loads (including dead loads) Column 3 Minimum Stud Size, mm Column 4 Maximum Stud Spacing, mm Column 5 Maximum Unsupported Height, m 1. Interior No load 38 × 38 406 2.4   38 × 89 flat(1) 3.6 Attic not accessible by a stairway 38 × 64 610 3.0 38 × 64 flat(1) 38 × 89 Attic accessible by a stairway plus 1 floor Roof load plus 1 floor Attic not accessible by stairway plus 2 floors Roof load, Attic accessible by a stairway Attic not accessible by a stairway plus 1 floor Attic accessible by a stairway plus 2 floors 305 Roof load plus 2 floors 64 × 89 38 × 140 4.2 Attic accessible by a stairway plus 3 floors Roof load plus 3 floors Module 8 ARCH 28544 – Architectural Studio 2

Tables & Supplementary Standards What are the Supplementary Standards? There are many of them… one example that is important to us is: Supplementary Standard SB-12, “Energy Efficiency for Housing” Module 8 ARCH 28544 – Architectural Studio 2
