Stereotypes, Prejudice, Discrimination & Anti-Semitism

Stereotypes: Generalized beliefs about the characteristics of a group (good or bad)

Examples of Stereotypes

All blondes are unintelligent.

Guys are messy and unclean.

All Muslims are terrorists.

All Jews are greedy.

Prejudice

Where does prejudice come from?

Prejudice: Dislike based on faulty and inflexible generalizations; either felt or expressed. It may be directed toward a group as a whole or toward individuals because of their group membership

When you see this images, what word or words comes to mind?

Discrimination: Different treatment of people based on their membership of a group

How about when you see these?

Why do stereotypes, prejudice and hatred still exist in the US?

Anti-Semitism A stereotyped unfavorable attitude toward a Jewish person or group not based on factual information

The History of Anti-Semitism The history of Anti-Semitism can be broken into 3 main periods of history: Ancient/Roman times Christian/Medieval period Modern Anti-Semitism

Ancient/Roman Times Jews were persecuted by the Romans for not accepting their gods Jews refused to support the Roman government Jews revolted against the Romans Rome crushed the rebellion and forced the Jews out of Palestine in 70C.E.

Why did early Christians hate the Jews?

Why did Christians hate the Jews? Ties to the Devil Believed to be Christ Killers Infidels (Non-believers) Some said Jews used the blood of Christian Children in passover rituals. Mysterious death or disappearance of a child was “proof” of this. Others believed they were working for the devil and they could bring about: Droughts, Storms, Floods, Illness, Miscarriages, and Birth Defects In the 14th Century People believed Jews poisoned wells, causing the Bubonic Plague. They lived in misery, proof that God hated them. Different Beliefs Jews do not believe Christ is the Messiah Don’t accept the belief in Original Sin Don’t believe in Predestination Don’t Practice Sacraments Don’t believe that priests are intermediaries between God and man Sex and sin are not equated (Rabbis can marry.) Eve is not a temptress, but mother to all of mankind. Life after death is an unknowable mystery.
