How can I as an educator create an SEL environment that’s LGBTQ inclusive?

Scenarios You see students passing a note in class and intercept it. It is a drawing making fun of a trans student for their gender identity. How do you respond?

Scenarios You work at an elementary school and there is a trans girl in your class. She has been using the girl’s restroom. A parent finds out and is upset. They talk to you at the end of a school day and say they are worried for the safety of their child and they also said that kids can’t know they’re trans at such a young age anyways.

Scenarios You work in small, predominantly white town that is fairly conservative. A queer youth of color named Alix has been being bullied for months both because of racism and homophobia. They have an outburst in the hallway towards Mark- a student that’s been harassing them. Alix verbally defends himself and gets sent to the principal’s office. Mark, the white straight student who has been targeting them didn’t get in trouble at all. This is part of a pattern of students of color experiencing more discipline than white students. You have both of these students in your class later that week and Mark says something making fun of Alix and the whole class laughs. How do you handle it?

Scenarios A twelve year old trans youth in another class is really outspoken about their non-binary identity and carries around a trans flag. They keep getting bullied and their teacher takes away the flag saying they are bringing this attention to themself. What is wrong with this approach and how do you talk to your colleague?

Scenarios Your school has a very gendered dress code. You have a trans student who is starting to wear skirts. The administration sends her to the principal’s office saying boys can’t wear dresses and imply that she is just joking around and don’t respect her gender identity. Your student has been having a really hard time and came to you in tears. How do approach the administration? What legal protections can you reference?

Self Reflection Closure Reflect on our own ideas and actions as educators: How are we ensuring inclusive spaces for LGBTQ youth? How are we interrupting racism as well as sexism, homophobia and transphobia in our workplaces and when were serving young people? What is our commitment to creating and maintaining inclusive spaces in our work/life?
