LEARNING CHECK STATION 2 True or False Official statistics are published annually by the home office. Official statistics are a cheap and easily available secondary form of data. Official statistics show the whole picture. All crime is reported to the police. All crime is recorded by the police. The best example of a victim survey is the British crime survey. A victim survey has no ethical issues. A victim survey may uncover hidden crimes. Self report surveys may lack validity. Self report studies are anonymously.

LEARNING CHECK STATION 3 Who am I? Read each statement and decide who the theory is I believe the nuclear family is best as it socialises children properly, teaching the norms and values and helps prepare them for wider society. Crime exists to act as a role model for the wrong way to behave. If others see a criminal punished it reinforces socialisation and prevents anomie. I believe that single parent families and benefit dependency are causing problems in our society. A lack of male role model mean more anti social boys are being created, which is the cause of crime in our society. A return to traditional values will reduce crime. I believe that the family is a tool for exploitation. It means workers work hard for little money as they have to earn money to provide for their family and families teach values of hard work. People commit crimes when they are frustrated they cannot achieve goals legitimately. I believe crime is a tool used by men to dominate women, for example domestic violence. I believe that when women do commit crime they are treated harshly as it is seen as double deviance as they are seen as socially wrong.

LEARNING CHECK STATION 4 Match up the speech bubbles to show the argument of to what extent are criminals born or made. (1mark for each correct match)

Sociologists believe crimes are socially constructed. Lombroso studied prisoners in Italian prisons I in 1876. He said that criminals were a separate species and did not have any morals. He distinguished different types of criminals murderers were said to have: Cold, glassy, blood-shot eyes, curly, abundant hair, strong jaws, long ears and thin lips Some people are naturally more likely to be criminals. They inherit a gene from their parents. Steve Jones a geneticist believes genes help to shape our behaviour. Sociologists believe crimes are socially constructed. Mobley robbed Domino’s pizza store and shot John C. Collin, the store manager, in the back of the head. Over the next three weeks, Mobley committed six additional armed robberies. His lawyer claimed he had a criminal gene. Laws can change from culture to culture and time to time. So people are only criminal because society has labelled their actions a crime. Labelling an lead to a self fulfilling prophecy. If someone is labelled criminal this can cause them to become one. The media can influence behaviours. By deciding groups of people are criminal it can create deviance amplification.

A lack of correct norms and values is argued to be the cause by many A lack of correct norms and values is argued to be the cause by many. Functionalists believe that those who have criminal role models will therefore become criminal. PMS: abdominal Bloating, Cramps, including leg cramps, Swelling of body parts, hypoglycaemia Depression, anxiety, Anger , Guilt, Fatigue, Aggressiveness Intolerance, Irritability, Restlessness, Sugar and Salt Craving, Increased intake of Alcohol, Hysteria It has been found that around 80% of female crime happens around the time of their period, due to stress caused by their hormones. Research has shown that early childhood deprivation, lack of attachment in childhood could also lead to a person developing a criminal personality as they are looking for attention and affection from elsewhere. On November 9th 1981 a London barmaid walked out of the Old Bailey a free woman. She had threatened to kill a policeman when she was already on probation for another crime- a stabbing. Her lawyer argued she suffered severe PMT which had a Jekyll and Hyde effect on her life. It was seen as a defence. Peers are influential. Peer group pressure means people do things to fit in. Subcultures can develop.
