Suffocation National Safety Council recognizes two types of suffocation: Suffocation - ingested object Suffocation - mechanical Abdominal thrusts aka Heimlich maneuver

Suffocation by ingestion In children, choking is usually caused by food, toys and other small objects that get easily lodged in a child’s small airway. Anything that fits can be a danger: raw carrots and celery, peas, nuts, sunflower seeds, cherries with pits, watermelon with seed, popcorn and hard candy are a few examples.

Suffocation Mechanical suffocation includes smothering by bed clothes, thin plastic materials, cave-ins or confinement in closed spaces, cords, etc. Third leading cause of death in children up to four years of age The most common way for children to suffocate is in the bed or crib and by accidental hanging.
