MSND Terms to Know and Love

DRAMA story with conflict, action, crisis, and atmosphere designed to be acted before an audience

TRAGEDY a drama that contains the ruin of the leading characters

COMEDY a drama with a happy ending characters overcome their trials

ALLUSION the reference to something outside of the work FOR EXAMPLE: “Your nose is as red as Rudolph’s”

ASIDE remark made to audience or another character that others on stage are not supposed to hear

A play on words, using spelling or sound PUN A play on words, using spelling or sound Sea captains don't like crew cuts When you dream in color, it's a pigment of your imagination

COMIC RELIEF humor to relieve an intense moment in the drama (like cracking a joke at a funeral)

SOLILOQUY speech given when character is alone on stage (hear someone’s thoughts)

CHARACTER FOILS Direct opposite characters

CHARACTER DOUBLE Directly mirrored characters

THE GLOBE theater in London where Shakespeare’s plays were performed

IAMB the two syllables put together one gets “beat” – one does not “HEL-LO”

IAMBIC PENTAMETER a grouping of five iambs (ten syllables total) “Hello hello hello hello hello”
