Tonight’s Agenda Outline expectations for Language Arts (Reading). Outline expectations for Math. Suggestions for helping your child at home.

Goals for Promotion to second grade Students should demonstrate mastery of common core skills. This is represented by 3’s on report card. To earn 4’s, students must be working above a first grade level.

English Language Arts There are five core strands: Phonemic Awareness Phonics Vocabulary Fluency Reading Comprehension (These are also aligned with Writing.)

English Language Arts Phonemic awareness Count syllables in a word Blend phonemes (sounds) Change beginning, middle, end sounds to produce new words

Phonics Demonstrate an understanding of letter-sound relationships by decoding words to read and apply this knowledge to temporary and conventional spelling patterns A represents the vowel sound in cap and in cape. What is the difference?

Phonics Assessments Why are we doing Phonics Tests instead of Spelling Tests? Not memorizing Using phonics skills How are we assessing them? Written assessments- in the form of a spelling test. Quarterly writing samples 3D Individual

Vocabulary Recognize vocabulary used in texts for school and pleasure reading. Increase vocabulary by participating in class discussions and reading independently at least 15 minutes per day. Use new vocabulary to create oral, written and visual texts.

Vocabulary Assessment Informal Classroom discussion Daily whole group and small group reading Creative writing We will begin having vocabulary assessments later in the year. Students will be expected to match definition and use in sentence.

Fluency Effective Fluency is the ability to read grade level text accurately and quickly. Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Goal for first grade promotion: Student reads between 40 – 60 words per minute. Fluency is assessed in January.

Reading Comprehension Assessments Formal Comprehension Assessments 3D Individual Assessments Beginning, Middle, and End of Year Informal Daily class discussions Small group reading Centers/Work Stations We will be assessing students each week on a short story with comprehension questions.

What is a 3D Reading Assessment? 3D is a formal, standardized Early Reading Assessment that covers Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension skills. Students are assessed individually 3 times a year. Teacher will share the results with parents after the assessments with either a conference or written progress report.

Expected text your child should be reading…. Your child should be able to read similar texts by the end of the first quarter (October). This is a level E. Your child should be able to read similar texts by the end of the second quarter (December). This is a level G.

Expected writing by the end of First Quarter (End of October) .

What can you do to help your child at home? Have your child read aloud every night. Discuss the text (reading material) with your child. Ask your child questions about the story elements: fiction or nonfiction. setting, characters, problem and solution Ask your child to identify some text features and find some of the important facts if it is non-fiction. Study sight words and continue to review previous words. Read, read, read!

Math Math Core Strands Operations and Algebraic Thinking Number and Operations Base Ten Measurement and Data Geometry Mathematical Practices

Operations and Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Add and subtract within 20. Work with addition and subtraction equations.

Number and Operations Base Ten Extend the counting sequence. Understand place value (ones, tens, and hundreds). Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.

Measurement and Data Measure lengths using standard and nonstandard units. Tell and write time. Represent and interpret data on graphs.

Geometry Describe shapes and their attributes (sides, angles, or vertices/corners). Identify shapes , 2D and 3D. Fractions- Dividing shapes into halves, thirds, fourths, etc. Creating new shapes

Mathematical Practices Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
