The role of IIASA in science diplomacy

The three strands of science diplomacy Diplomacy for Science Science for Diplomacy Science in Diplomacy New frontiers in science diplomacy, AAAS/Royal Society 2010

IIASA is a child of Diplomacy for Science

Science for Diplomacy: IIASA as an honest broker between nations IIASA builds bridges between people and nations, including those with special relations: USA – Russia Russia – Ukraine USA – Iran Iran – Israel* Israel* – Egypt Korea – Japan Finland – Russia … India – Pakistan USA – Mexico China – Japan Japan – Russia Vietnam – China USA – Vietnam Germany – Israel* … * joining soon

Science in Diplomacy: Global transformations create new opportunities for IIASA Science diplomacy as a key element of IIASA research projects IIASA research supporting international policy efforts IIASA exercising global leadership in the science diplomacy community

Science diplomacy as a key element of IIASA research projects IIASA research supporting policy-makers in foreign / development / trade ministries, but also other ministries with an international dimension (e.g. climate) Cross-cutting projects, e.g. Arctic Futures, Eurasian Economic Integration Projects run within research programs, e.g. air pollution in South-East Asia Need to identify opportunities and overcome fragmentation

IIASA research supporting international policy efforts IIASA supports a number of inter- national bodies and policies, e.g.: UN system (e.g. Paris agreement, SDGs) Continental bodies such as the European Commission (e.g. Knowledge Centre for Migration and Demography), ASEAN Others international bodies such as the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Arctic Council, etc. Need to enhance the visibility and the impact of this support

IIASA exercising global leadership in the science diplomacy community Foreign Ministries’ S&T Advisors Network International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) OECD - GSF ICSU International dialogue on integrating science and technology advice into foreign ministries, Laxenburg, 18-19 Oct 2016

Why IIASA? IIASA was created by diplomats (“Stallgeruch”) Based in Vienna, it engages with the diplomatic world on a daily basis Its mission is to tackle complex challenges no single country can solve It has authority due its scientific excellence and its membership (71% of the global economy and 63% of the global population) It is (perceived as) a neutral and independent honest broker
