Fantasy and Science Fiction Vocabulary On a piece of loose leaf paper copy the words and the definitions

fantasy The genre of fiction in which story elements defy the natural physical laws of our known world – events related to magic

archetype A perfect example of something.

characterization The creation and convincing representation of fictitious characters.

Universal theme The idea that holds the story together or the central meaning of a piece of writing.

plot Also called storyline. The plan, scheme, or main story of a literary or dramatic work.

protagonist The leading character, hero, or heroine of a literary or dramatic work.

antagonist A person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another.

syntax The study of the rules for the formation of grammatical sentences in a language.

tone The attitude of the author towards a literary or dramatic work.

mood Background tone of a literary work; how it makes you feel.

technique Any method an author uses to convey their message.

setting When and where a story takes place The social climate of the story How the weather affects the conflict

conflict The struggle between two or more opposing forces.

resolution The part of the story in which the problems are solved and the action comes to an end.

inference The process of deriving the strict logical consequences of assumed premises.
